My Review:

Let’s be honest, I was wary going into The V Girl. Sexual violence is not a subject I typically expose myself to because it’s triggering and honestly Dystopia’s are a subject I try to avoid because of burnout, but I was drawn in through the idea of Lila’s world.

“I’m not afraid of what could happen to me. I fear for my family.” – The V Girl, Mya Roberts

Roberts has created a terrifyingly realistic world that, if the multiverse theory is true, could be one of the many futures of America. Lila’s world is cruel, unforgiving, and violent. The military recruits not only for soldiers, but they force others into sexual slavery for the military. As if being a slave isn’t bad enough, when you are picked, you will be raped on a stone before your entire community. All live in fear of recruitment and knowing that the soldiers will be coming to town, Lila is on a mission – that her first time be with someone she cares about, not against her will. And her eyes are set on her best friend Rey.

“Unfortunately, the twins have witnessed sexual violence and death. In wartime, you can’t protect children from the cruelest facts of life.” – The V Girl, Mya Roberts

Lila is an extremely likeable character. She is strong, yet is naive when it comes to love, relationships, and life. One of my favorite quirks of her character is her compulsion to be a voyeur. As a girl who fears being raped, she watches a loving couple engage in sexual acts to remind herself that sex can be a loving act even if her actions of peeping may seem as something sick. I understood her on a deeper level in those moments.

“Watching lovers may be a perverted act, but I need to remind myself that sex can be an expression of love.” – The V Girl, Mya Roberts

Lila repeatedly makes dangerous mistakes while on her quest to seduce her friend Rey. Her father and brother are disabled causing her entire family to be outcasts in the community. This raises Lila to the status of main provider, so she has to travel out of town – a dangerous activity for a V girl – to work. Lila isn’t taken in by either side of this war that has torn the United States apart – she is loyal to how it was before when everyone is free and that gives her an edge from many of the other characters.

“I wonder why girls, in his mind, couldn’t be fighters. Are we only brides, baby carriers, or recruits?” – The V Girl, Mya Roberts

Love is a complicated matter in The V Girl and although looking from the outside in, I can understand the frustration at Lila for not seeing that Aleksey is a good man who is trying to save Lila and her family. In her world, I’m sure many men have used the savior/sweet angle to lure girls. I think her hesitancy is completely based in fear – half for fear of if Aleksey is truly dangerous and half in fear that he’s not.

That being said, although I liked Aleksey as a man and character in this world, there were many aspects of his personality that seemed too intense and I had to remind myself that he’s a product of the world just like Lila. By the end of the book, I was enamored with him though. He and Lila are truly a good match.

“Now that familiarity has set in, I have discovered all of the men inside Aleskey’s body: the expert lover, the dominate alpha, the honorable soldier, the poet, the child inside the twenty-five-year-old man. – The V Girl, Mya Roberts

The V Girl is a dark, gritty tale that is nothing like you’d expect it to be. Rape and romance are two subjects that you would never expect to be in the same story, but it works. The sweetness of Alesky’s and Lila’s romance brings light to a very dark tale.

Cover Reveal: Redeem, The Caelian Cycle #2.5

Hello Beautiful People!

I have been waiting for weeks to share this cover with you and I'm so exited to get it out there. If you haven't guessed or read the blurb yet, this novella is from Kian's point-of-view and it's set before Lost. I wrote this novella because there are events that happen in the third novel, Shift, that needed some background. Plus, I felt Kian needed a bit more explanation of his actions in Lost and, personally, I wanted the readers to understand why he is who he is.

Redeem ripped some hard emotions out of me and I feel it came across in the story and although I haven't finished Shift yet, Redeem has been one of my favorite stories I have ever written.

So here it is people, Redeem:

It took me FOREVER to find a male model that even remotely looked like Kian does in my head and then it took EVEN LONGER to find one that was wearing clothes. LOL!!!

It took me FOREVER to find a male model that even remotely looked like Kian does in my head and then it took EVEN LONGER to find one that was wearing clothes. LOL!!!

Redeem - A Caelian Cycle Novella #2.5

A boy without a voice.

A teen without a home.

A man without hope.

Kian knows the way his life is headed will be the death of him. It doesn’t matter how many criminals he catches for Gordon's Bounty Detective Agency or how deep he tries to fall into the bottle – those eyes haunt him. All it took was one whisper of bad advice, one wrong choice, one mistake, to wipe out years of confidence he had struggled to build while living on his Grandmother’s farm. Then Kian found the box of files overflowing with unsolved crimes. Those cold cases jolted his soul from its vegetative state and awakened his resolve. Kian knew those cases were meant for him to solve, but the last thing he expected to find within a few wrinkled folders was his ultimate redemption.

Release Date: January 18th, 2016

Inspiration Board - Rebecca

Hello Beautiful People!

I've received quite a few emails lately asking some questions about The Caelian Cycle. (please hold while I run around and squee) It warms my heart to see people interested in the books and characters. I will answer your questions in a blog post soon, but first here's an in-depth look at...

Rebecca

Rebecca was a character I HAD to put in the book series. Every girl needs loyal BFF's and Sadie is lucky to have two. Her name and a few of her personality quirks are a nod to my own high school best friend who was the glue that held my sanity together during some trying times. I also borrowed a few of her traits, the ones I admire most, from my bestie and sister in law.

To me, Rebecca is a study of opposites. She's not your typical beauty, but her siren Talent makes her attractive to others. Her personality is both sultry, but with an undertone of innocence. She's outgoing and others are drawn to her, but clings to her small group of friends instead of going out to party like Madison. If she has a strong opinion about something, she fights for it and doesn't let anyone sway her focus. Her look-at-the-bright-side attitude brightens the group and her gentle wisdom guides her friends.

Sadie and Rebecca are connected on a deeper level than with the others in the group. They've lived together since childhood and as two of six Caelian's with colored skin at St. Vincent's, they've had a whole different set of issues than the other's.

In Bound, Rebecca will go through some life altering changes and will have to dig deep into her soul for strength that she didn't know she possessed. That is true for any person. Growth and change are always hard, but its how we handle them that makes us better or in some cases, worse. Rebecca and the others will have to grow in order to become the adults needed to change the world.

Excerpt from Lost

I put my phone back in my back pocket. Crossing my arms, I looked up at the stars again. The night was devoid of clouds, unusual for spring. Golden stars glittered across the heavens, winking at me from the endless arch of the void and transporting me to a place of tranquility. The peace of space poured into my soul.

“What’s a Liam moment?” Kian’s gruff voice whispered. I felt his hot breath caress my ear. His closeness both startled me and sent a shiver down my spine. I straightened my back.

“I thought I told you I wasn’t interested.” I attempted to make my voice sound forceful, but it came out soft. I felt the heat from his body as he stepped closer to me.

“What’s your name?” Kian asked. The gruffness of his voice from earlier had left. This new voice was smooth and flowed like poetry. My heart sped up and I heard the blood pulsing in my ears. I was sure he could hear it. What kind of Talent was he using to cause me to react this way?

“Quit using your Talent on me,” I hissed.

“I’m not. If I was, you’d know it,” he replied with a chuckle.

“Oh.” I didn’t understand what was happening. He placed a hand on my waist and the warmth was searing. I was sure it would leave a mark. My eyes closed and my breath deepened. Tingles flowed from his hand, spreading throughout my body and stirring something in my soul. I released a breath I didn’t realize I had been holding. “Take your hand off me and back away before I break your fingers.”

Kian snickered. “Spunky.”

“Creepy,” I replied.

Kian chuckled again, his hot breath shooting sparks right to my stomach.

“Don’t make me ask again.” I felt his hand tense. His fingers increased their pressure against my waist right before the coldness swept in as he removed his hand. I released the breath I was holding.

“Tell me, how would you have broken my fingers?” Kian asked as I watched his hips curve inward inching closer to me. His movements were surreptitious and my heart accelerated as the space between became almost non-existent. He was still too close for my comfort, but at least he wasn’t touching me. My focus shot up to his face. His face was a mixture of curiosity and humor.

“Every orphanage offers a variety of self-defense classes, among other electives.” I inclined my head as I studied him again. “You’ve never lived in one.”

Kian’s smirk graduated to a full on smile, igniting his face. This smile stole my breath and something told me it was one that few people had the pleasure of seeing. An unintentional smile dangled on the corner of my lips in return.

“No, I haven’t had the pleasure. Spunky, independent, and observant. You’re a triple threat. . . You never gave me your name.”

“Correct.”

Kian leaned forward. “Will you tell me your name?”

“No.”

He leaned closer. The heat from his body warmed me and my heart felt as if it would explode. I lifted my gaze back to the stars, trying to force my willpower to rally against Kian’s charms.

“Please,” he whispered.

“No,” I softly replied. His presence was intense and it scared me. My brain screamed at me to introduce his nose to the palm of my hand, but my arm refused to obey. My traitorous body reveled in possibility of feeling his strong arms wrapped around and pressing himself against it.

“Well, if you’re not going to tell me, I’m sure your friend will.”

Confused, I turned to look at Kian. My nose brushed against his cheek for a brief moment before my brain could register to lean back.

“What the?” Michael’s voice broke whatever spell Kian was putting on me. “Get your hands off her!”

Cold air filled the space where Kian’s body used to be. Restrained, I turned, tilting my head as I watched Michael jerk Kian even further from me. Kian and Michael were the same height, but Kian surpassed Michael in mass. His corded muscles rippled as he squeezed his hands into fists and his angular features twisted into a snarl.

“Are you okay, Sadie?” Michael looked at me, softening his features and sweeping me from head to toe. I felt Lacy’s arm entwine with mine.

I shrugged. “Nothing I couldn’t handle.” My body was shaking, but thankfully my voice came out steady and disinterested.

Kian turned away from Michael and looked at me. His questioning gaze flowed into a smirk. He was enjoying this. Kian twisted out of Michael’s grasp with ease, his movements graceful. Kian was trained as well.

I felt my lips curl up as I watched.

Kian rotated to face me again, ignoring Michael’s protests. “Until we meet again, Sadie.” He dipped his head in a courteous manner, keeping his gaze locked on to mine. He began to leave, turning back to look at me again with one side of his lips curled up as if we were sharing a secret.

My heart fell into my stomach as I realized that he had learned my name. Throughout the whole uncomfortable encounter, I had kept him in the dark. My lips pursed as I watched him walk away. Even his stride was arrogant. Kian was unsettling.

“What was that?” Lacy asked.

I shrugged again. “I have no idea.”

Writer's Block

I don't think I've truly experienced writer's block in it's true definition - inability to produce new work or a creativity slowdown, but I have experienced what I call Writers Attention Deficit Disorder.

WADD is when you know you need to write, but - oh look over there- something shiny and new and fun or you have an burning need to write a new blog post. *heh* OR when you are writing your current project and know exactly what you need to say and where the story is heading then...

You get this amazing idea for another project and it's so cool. YOU MUST WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN NOW OR THE WORLD WILL END!

I am currently flip flopping between both spectrum's of WADD at the moment. At first, I was just taking a break to read these three eBooks I had pre-ordered months ago that were just released. Then, my husband bought us a shiny new bicycle trailer, so now we can drag the rug-rats out with us on our rides.

Now, I can't get two other projects off my mind. Grant it, when the time comes for me to start them I will have an awesome baseline to start outlining and world building, but come on, Donnielle, get your act together.

Now back to push through another 1,000 words on the second installment of the Caelian Cycle.

Wish me luck!
