Issues with Bound - Update

Hello lovelies!

I have received quite a few emails regarding my boxed set and the second book in my Caelian Cycle Series, Bound. Apparently during my rush in getting updated versions out before my BookBub promotion and my fast encroaching deadlines for As We Rise: Rogue, I uploaded an older draft of Bound instead of the fully edited version.

Cue McCoy Facepalm.

This is THE first time I have made such a grandiose mistake and due to the epic amount of embarrassment I'm feeling at the moment - it won't be repeated. I'm sure in the grand scheme of things this isn't such a terrible disaster, but is sure feels that way to me. As a reader myself, I take your concerns seriously.

Nothing to see here.gif

Readers, I am terribly sorry for this and have sent the corrected version to Amazon. Right now, I’m working with them to make the new version available to those who have already purchased either the single or the boxed set.

If for some reason you cannot get the updated version and you’re like me, impatient, send me an email at donnielletyner@outlook.com with proof of purchase and I’ll send you the updated copy.

I appreciate those who have emailed me. It means a lot that you took the time to make sure I knew what was going on with my books instead of choosing to leave a bad review and move on.

You guys rock!

I'm Not Dead...

Well, obviously because who is posting all these Book Reviews and Blog Tours.

Seriously though, I have been a little M.I.A. in the personal blog post department. Blogging has never been my strong suit. Coming up with subject matter that’s interesting? UGH… who do you think I am a writer? Oh... wait...

Yeah Okay. I write stuff about things, but I take many hours to fine tune my ideas before spending even more hours writing them. Then heaping another few hundred more hours with edits and promotions... Books take a lot of time, but somehow are hella easier than ONE. SIMPLE. BLOG. POST.

That being said, I am going to try to make time for personal posts. Even if the only thing I have to say is – today I wrote some words and parented some children. That’s interesting, right?

Right?

In the spirit of blogging here is my update: kids = unpredictable, self = stressed, family = love them, friends = both wonderful and tragic, and books = excited.

With my family selling our house and our move looming in the distance, writing has been a thing I do when I’m not cleaning my house for a showing or running around looking at other houses to buy. SHIFT has finally received a release date of July 22nd 2016 and will conclude The Caelian Cycle. I’m sad to see Sadie’s story come to an end, but at the same time thrilled to start on a new project.

Earlier this year, I decided to jump ahead in my Works-In-Progress line to write a stand-alone novel to honor my JanMom BFF who passed away in March. This novel had nothing more than an idea and some working thoughts on character development (unlike the duology I have been working on for almost a year while writing The Caelian Cycle).

Since finishing SHIFT, I have spent what little free time I have researching and developing this new world set in a different part of our galaxy. Not everything has been set in stone, but I have a working plot and an interesting history for my new set of characters.

I can’t wait to share it with you, but until then check out SHIFT on Goodreads or Amazon and please leave reviews – indie authors depend on them in order to sell more books.

Until then - STAY AWESOME!

Cover Reveal for Shift

Hello Beautiful People!

I'm pleased to share the final cover of The Caelian Cycle in it's beautiful entirety. Seriously! I'm so excited...

Are you ready?

*****

You sure?

Isn't it beautiful? I could look at it all day...  which I sorta do since it's my lock-screen wallpaper on my phone. Let me know what you think?

Revelations.

Hello Beautiful People!

Writing Shift has been a difficult road. Between the holidays and New Year funk, I got really behind on my schedule. Then I hit a wall - Not only do I just don't want to write, but everything I write is crap. CRAP I tell you. Thank GOD for the editing process.

There's nothing I can say to explain just how horrible it is when, as writer, you go through this self-hate mental block. It's so hard because as I am writing, I am mentally rolling my eyes at myself. This crap-fest going on here doesn't just apply to my novels - no it has spilled over into my freelancing jobs. So, I decided that I needed a new lease on life and possibly a break.

I have recognized that I've given myself undue stress by setting deadlines. Isn't freedom one of the reasons I chose to self-publish? YES.  So, I'm not longer allowing myself to stress about getting my books out fast (sorry those who are patiently waiting the releases).

Secondly, I've taken a short sabbatical with my freelance work and my family had decided to do a little traveling when my husband can get a way. It's going to be awesome! I cannot wait to share our adventures.

Stay tuned. Soon I will reveal a teaser image for Shift followed by the playlist. I'm trying to set up a cover reveal tour, so we will see how that goes. I honestly cannot wait to share the cover for Shift. It is amazing and probably the best one out of the series. It's my favorite - for sure.

Until then... Stay Awesome!

January: an update

Hello Beautiful People!

Hi! How are ya?

Well... I have been in a bit of a writing slump lately. January is ALWAYS the worst month for me - seriously. Life is overwhelming right now and that is after I have all the other "new year" things to deal with. The beginning of the year has always been full of too much LIFE STUFF that I can never seem to find the time or motivation to do anything besides make sure the kids are being taking care of and well... exist.

However, things have been looking up. There has been a huge re-working of our daily schedules that made me fall behind on my word count goals so sadly, I will probably have to push back SHIFT's release until April 2016

Fear not! All the Tyner's are adjusting and *fingers crossed* everything will be OKAY.

With the extra time until SHIFT's release, I have some cool things planned that will (hopefully) pump everybody up. Those things are Shh-Shh-Secrete-Quite. However I can tell you that in the next few weeks, I will be able to get the blurb (maybe have the playlist ready) and have a cover reveal for SHIFT - so that's awesome.

Finally, I decided to host a few book tours on the site. Not a whole bunch because ain't nobody got time for that. I've been considering this for a while because I want to help promote other self-published authors and to be transparent - the traffic to my site wouldn't hurt. Also, I'd like to read and review the books that interest me.

Love you guys! Here's to February 2016 arriving with it's 29 days of getting my life back in order. I CAN DO THIS!

Stay Awesome!!!

Cover Reveal: Redeem, The Caelian Cycle #2.5

Hello Beautiful People!

I have been waiting for weeks to share this cover with you and I'm so exited to get it out there. If you haven't guessed or read the blurb yet, this novella is from Kian's point-of-view and it's set before Lost. I wrote this novella because there are events that happen in the third novel, Shift, that needed some background. Plus, I felt Kian needed a bit more explanation of his actions in Lost and, personally, I wanted the readers to understand why he is who he is.

Redeem ripped some hard emotions out of me and I feel it came across in the story and although I haven't finished Shift yet, Redeem has been one of my favorite stories I have ever written.

So here it is people, Redeem:

It took me FOREVER to find a male model that even remotely looked like Kian does in my head and then it took EVEN LONGER to find one that was wearing clothes. LOL!!!

It took me FOREVER to find a male model that even remotely looked like Kian does in my head and then it took EVEN LONGER to find one that was wearing clothes. LOL!!!

Redeem - A Caelian Cycle Novella #2.5

A boy without a voice.

A teen without a home.

A man without hope.

Kian knows the way his life is headed will be the death of him. It doesn’t matter how many criminals he catches for Gordon's Bounty Detective Agency or how deep he tries to fall into the bottle – those eyes haunt him. All it took was one whisper of bad advice, one wrong choice, one mistake, to wipe out years of confidence he had struggled to build while living on his Grandmother’s farm. Then Kian found the box of files overflowing with unsolved crimes. Those cold cases jolted his soul from its vegetative state and awakened his resolve. Kian knew those cases were meant for him to solve, but the last thing he expected to find within a few wrinkled folders was his ultimate redemption.

Release Date: January 18th, 2016

Redeem Playlist

Hello Beautiful People.

Guess what? I have seen the cover for Redeem and it looks fabulous! Kian looks amazing and I can't wait to share it with you guys, but Y'ALL will have to wait until December 28th. I'm doing a cover reveal with YA Bound Book Tours, so check your favorite book blog - it may be featured.

Redeem doesn't have a firm release date, but I'm hoping to get it to you by January 25th 2016.

But until then, I will leave you with the playlist for Redeem. This list is a bit different than from the other two novels. It has a lot more guitars and deeper lyrics than what I have listened to with Lost or Bound. It is probably because the pro-tag is male in this one, but the songs are definitely a direct result of his issues that differ than Sadie's.

Redeem - A Caelian Cycle Novella Playlist

  • Jars of Clay -  Loneliness & Alcohol (Jt Daly Remix)
  • Blue October - Bleed Out
  • Red - Darkest Part
  • Matthew and the Atlas - Out of the Darkness
  • The Silent Comedy - Bartholomew
  • Art of Dying - Get Through This
  • We As Human - Bring to Life
  • Beck - Blue Moon
  • Wolf Rider - For You
  • Shinedown - Unity

Redeem Blurb Reveal

Hello beautiful people,

I’ve been a busy little writer last month participating in NaNoWriMo and finished by the seat of my pants at the very end. It was so hard to finish on before the month ended and this time, the reason for my procrastination is Netflix, specifically JESSICA JONES. The husband and I are in so much obsessive love with that show.

Anyway… Since then, I have finished my first round of copy edits and the manuscript is now with my beta readers. The stars are aligning perfectly with my copy editor and cover artists and right now it looks like you guys could get a copy by mid-January. WOOT!

Until then, I will tease your little hearts out. *insert evil laugh* Beginning with the blurb below. Enjoy!

REASONS

Hello Beautiful People!

I've been kept very busy between my oldest starting Kindergarten and my youngest refusing to be re-directed AKA distracted long enough for me to actually do any real teaching, so social networking and blogging have been put at the bottom of my list.

BUT

I have been a busy little writer. My current project: Redeem is almost complete (well the first draft is). Yay for the motivation that is NaNoWriMo!  In case you haven't heard, I decided to write a novella from Kian's perspective before the final Caelian Cycle Novel is released. From the beginning, I played with the idea of writing a novella from one of the other character's perspectives, but never really committed until I started finalizing my outline for Shift (Book 3) and I will admit, some motivational push from a few readers who have questioned Kian's motives throughout the series.

With every character, I always write a small backstory and personality profile in order for me to make sure that each character is complex and real to the reader. I felt that Kian's backstory really needed to be told before the third book comes out. Both Sadie and Kian have BIG choices to make in the next novel.

There's a lot that goes down in Shift and a good bit of it has to do with Kian and his past with how it relates to Sadie. I felt that so far throughout the Caelian Cycle, Kian has been this presence sorta in the background, but not really because he is a big part of Sadie's life (and the book is from her perspective). But Sadie is also a big part of his life, even before one knew the other existed. In the books, Kian doesn't express much beyond what Sadie pulls out of him and there are BIG reasons for this. There are reasons for his reactions to her in the first book and for his strong reactions to certain choices she makes in the second book. The reasons add up to major plot points in the third book.

One more time for posterity: REASONS!!!!

Moving on...

So, hang in there people. I am striving to have the novella out ASAP and will not be taking my usual two week break between writing projects in order to get the final book to you as quick as possible. :D

Stay AWESOME!

Did You Miss Me?

Hello Beautiful People!

I'm baaaaaack! Our vacation to south Texas was awesome - except the whole rainy part at the end, but it's Texas and weather cannot be predicted. However, I realized two things on this vacation. 1. I really need a DSLR camera. Pictures taken on your phone just don't do the scenery justice and 2. I'm so glad I decided to set my second book series in that area because now I have a legit, tax right-off excuse to go back. Just look at this:

Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park

This trip came at an awesome time because I REALLY needed a break. I've been working on some final touches on the third and final book of The Caelian Cycle's outline and finished the preliminary's on a Caelian Cycle Novella that will be released before the final book next year. YAY!

MIND. BLOWN.

I didn't set out to write any novella's, but Kian's story kept begging to be told. (Plus, I know a few fangirls who love themselves some Kian and I aim to please). The novella is from Kian's perspective and WILL NOT contain spoilers to the series (it will have hints though), but will open up some of the mystery to Kian's past and explain some of the weirdo choices he has made throughout the series.

This week, I will resume my weekly inspirational board posts, finishing my Caelian Crew from Lost. I haven't quite decided if I'm going to do the norms or start on the new characters from Bound to celebrate it's release next Monday. Which reminds me, this is your last week to purchase Lost for $0.99.

As always, STAY AWESOME!

Inspiration Board - Madison

Hello Beautiful People!

This time of year is always busy for the Tyner clan. Homeschool begins for the boy and I’m going to attempt to bring my 2-year-old in some activities – Lord help me! We also love to vacation this time of year. This weekend, I get the wonderful opportunity to go on a mom-cation with my mommy group. It will be nice to have a weekend out with the girls.

Pretty soon, we will be visiting Big Bend National Park and some of the surrounding area so be prepared for my social media to blast plenty of pictures. I’m so excited to have the opportunity to go, the area is where I will be setting my duology that will be published after I finish the Caelian cycle.

Today we're going to look at...

Madison

Madison is probably my favorite character in Lost, but there is a new character being introduced in Bound that I adore as well and would probably have to fight for top spot. Knowing Madison, she would take me up on that offer. It’s probably narcissistic that I love Madison so much because according to those who know me, she is the one character most like my own personality.

That may or may not be so, but I do know that I didn’t base her off myself (not intentionally). Madison’s character came from the days when I worked with teenagers at my church. I had the opportunity to work with some girls who were hardened by their different lives and it was those girls who my heart spoke to the most. Each girl had a different story and each dealt with the hardships in their life from mild personality quirks to some self-destructive behavior. Madison is a version of those girls who closed themselves off from all except those closest to them and those girls who had such low self-esteem that they sought out multiple sex partners in order to fill that hole in their heart that only loving yourself can fill. I wanted to give those girls the representation they deserve.

In Bound, Madison goes through some amazing highs and incredible lows that will break down her walls and rock everything she thought she knew about herself and the world around her. My goal for each character in the Caelian cycle it to become a better version of themselves by the end of the story.

Stay Awesome!

Inspiration Board - Rebecca

Hello Beautiful People!

I've received quite a few emails lately asking some questions about The Caelian Cycle. (please hold while I run around and squee) It warms my heart to see people interested in the books and characters. I will answer your questions in a blog post soon, but first here's an in-depth look at...

Rebecca

Rebecca was a character I HAD to put in the book series. Every girl needs loyal BFF's and Sadie is lucky to have two. Her name and a few of her personality quirks are a nod to my own high school best friend who was the glue that held my sanity together during some trying times. I also borrowed a few of her traits, the ones I admire most, from my bestie and sister in law.

To me, Rebecca is a study of opposites. She's not your typical beauty, but her siren Talent makes her attractive to others. Her personality is both sultry, but with an undertone of innocence. She's outgoing and others are drawn to her, but clings to her small group of friends instead of going out to party like Madison. If she has a strong opinion about something, she fights for it and doesn't let anyone sway her focus. Her look-at-the-bright-side attitude brightens the group and her gentle wisdom guides her friends.

Sadie and Rebecca are connected on a deeper level than with the others in the group. They've lived together since childhood and as two of six Caelian's with colored skin at St. Vincent's, they've had a whole different set of issues than the other's.

In Bound, Rebecca will go through some life altering changes and will have to dig deep into her soul for strength that she didn't know she possessed. That is true for any person. Growth and change are always hard, but its how we handle them that makes us better or in some cases, worse. Rebecca and the others will have to grow in order to become the adults needed to change the world.

Stay Awesome!

Inspiration Board - Kian

Hello Beautiful People,

This week has been a little crazy at home. September is the start of school and I'm trying to learn how to juggle teaching my kindergartner and having a toddler running around. Plus, we just found out my grandfather has cancer and prognosis doesn't look too good. So we've been visiting with them and trying to soak up as much time as possible and that is why I'm a little late on this inspiration board.

Today we're going to look at...

Kian

You will notice over many inspiration boards that I have a thing for men with beards. My dear husband has a glorious one and I find him way more attractive with his scruff than without. (and it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he looks 5 years younger than me without).

My idea for Kian is a mixture of the following traits: self-assured, pragmatic, tenacious, and caring. These four basic traits of Kian's personality are borrowed from four different men who have impacted my life. Caring comes from my brother. He has always been a sensitive soul even though his exterior says otherwise, but I knew he had a heart for caring when he first volunteered with the Special Olympics. Tenacious is one word I can describe my grandfather. Another word could be stubborn, but either way I've always admired how he got things done through every struggle. Pragmatic comes from my father in law. I come from a family of impulsive people and when I first saw how how he methodically thinks about his choices, my eyes were opened and frankly, I was little freaked out. Finally, self-assured comes from my husband. He has always exuded a confidence that I found myself trying to emulate.

Most romantic leads are very alpha male in their personality and there is a reason why that is. Women are typically attracted to the the tough, take action type of guys and usually in those stories the nice guy doesn't get the girl. She rides off on the bad boys motorcycle towards their happily ever after. Kian was never EVER destined to be one of those alpha males. Yes, Kian is strong and a little cocky. Yes, he has a deep dark secret. Yes,  in Bound, you will learn that he isn't exactly a nice guy. BUT he is sensitive to Sadie and her needs. He has the utmost respect for her and although his goes against his caring nature, he doesn't coddle her. He has seen some bad stuff through his job which has grounded him and given him a strong moral compass.

Kian isn't a hard character for me to write. He's what I hope my son will grow up to be (minus the family drama and dicey career choice). Out of all the love interests I have written, Kian has been my favorite by far.

I hope you guys love him too.

The Caelian Cycle Books Are On Sale

Hello beautiful people!

Shameless promotional post coming now, but a part of being a self-published author is that I've got to do this once in a while in order to bring more attention to my books. Stay tuned this week for another inspiration board post, this time we will explore how I came up with Kian's character.

Have any of you seen this graphic floating around the internet:

There isn't much to add to this graphic except the short description below for those who haven't had a chance to read the blurbs for Lost and Bound. << Click to visit their web pages for more information and bonus material.

The Caelian Cycle is a YA SciFi based in an alternative reality about a girl who comes into her Talent (powers) and inadvertently catches the attention of organizations who want her on their side. Sadie is a strong female character who comes into her own over the series. There is a romantic story-line, but the main focus is on the characters and the world they live in. Lost is available at all retailers in both eBook and print. Bound is currently only available in eBook form for pre-order.

Before I leave, I want to express my love for my readers. I greatly appreciate all of you who have read Lost and who have messaged me with your love. I especially adore those who have taken the time to go on Amazon, Goodreads, and other websites to leave a review. Leaving reviews and spreading the word through your social media accounts are ways you can help your favorite authors sell more books. You rock!

Inspiration Board - Sadie

Hello beautiful people!

I decided to start posting about my inspiration for each character, in The Caelian Cycle and eventually including other projects I am currently working on. If you have visited my Pinterest then you have probably seen most of these photos, but in the future I plan on expanding my inspiration boards to locations and themes I'm exploring within the book.  I'm going to start with the main character of the series...

Sadie

I love female characters that are strong and able. I especially love them when they have major weaknesses and flaws. That was what I was first thinking of when I was coming up with Sadie. She has lived a relatively easy life inside an orphanage with people who actually care for the children's well-being and although she never had to deal with abuse or neglect, she is still an orphan. Children who are left behind and/or feel cast aside have an emotional scar that will always be there. The scar may fade to almost nothing if their lives end up happy, but it will always be there - a reminder.

By the time Sadie is in high school, everyone in her peer group has discovered their Talents except her. She feels like an outcast, a freak. Then her boyfriend is murdered.

There are times in everyone's lives, even the strong ones, where they feel overwhelmed. These moments can last an hour, a day, weeks, months, or even years. Sadie is not weak because she struggles with her grief. She eventually comes to embrace it as a part of who she is and begins to live her life again.

When writing about Sadie, I wanted her to be level headed and to have a little bit of a no-nonsense personality, but with a touch of sass (she is southern after all). She thinks about her actions before jumping into situations, but she isn't so wrapped up in logic that she can't follow her heart. Teenagers can and do make stupid decisions, but that is not the sum of what they are. I have met many teenagers both young and old who make smart decisions that could rival some that I have made as an adult.

I'm going to leave you with a little tidbit, Sadie started off the series under a different name. I'll get into why the big name change another time, but I took on a huge responsibility when I renamed my character and I strive to make sure Sadie is hope and strength.

Hope you enjoyed this little insight. See you next week when we look into Kian.

The Wait is Over...

Hello beautiful people,

I just want to thank each and every one of you for your support and enthusiasm for the books of The Caelian Cycle. These characters, although not the first to come alive on paper from the madness of my mind, are the closest to my heart. Each character has at least one attribute taken from some very special people in my life.

I LOVE YOU GUYS!

Today two copies of Bound has been released into the hands of two special ladies, my Beta readers. This is always the hardest part for me because they are the first to read Sadie's story and their opinions matter greatly to me. With a lot of luck, I am looking at a tentative October 19th, 2015 release date pending hearing back from my copy editor.

Please enjoy the cover art for Bound below and just because I'm a little evil *insert laugh* I'll leave you with this: There is something on the cover art that is vital to the story line.

How to pronounce Caelian

Hi!

I've been asked a few times on how to pronounce Caelian properly and as always I'm here to serve. But first, I want to give you a little history on how I came up with the name.

When researching for Lost, I wanted the race of altered human's and their history to be as believable as possible. So I gathered facts: I knew the meteorite would land in southern Europe, around Rome during the great war. In the early 19th century we didn't have the technology to monitor the space around Earth consistently or have the ability to warn of an impending collision and that means rogue meteors "could" have happened. Science as we know it today was just started to emerge, but the laymen was still superstitious (especially in rural areas).

With these facts, I began looking into Roman mythology and found Caelus.

Caelus appears at the top of the curiass of Augustus of Prima Porta. One of the few depictions of Caelus in art.

Caelus appears at the top of the curiass of Augustus of Prima Porta. One of the few depictions of Caelus in art.

PAUSE for a brief mythology lesson:

Caelus, the Roman god of the Sky and the equivalent to the Greek god Uranus.  Caelus is the son of Aether (primordial deity representing the upper air in our atmosphere) and Dies or "Daylight". He is often paired with Terra "Earth" as the mother & father (mother earth & father sky), although to my knowledge they did not have children together. Caelus is the father of the Roman god Janus, Saturn, and Ops. Caelus is also the father of one of the three forms of Jupiter.

Random fact: Caelum is the Latin work for "sky" which is where we get our English word celestial.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

I loved the idea that the name of this new race of human's to derive from a meteor/ meteorite  named after the Roman god of the sky and it's believable since nearly all celestial bodies are named in that manner. So I created the Caelian's.

To figure out how to pronounce Caelian, I had to look at its root work Caelus. There are two camps of pronunciation: Classical that uses a hard 'C' and modern that pronounces the 'C' as an 'S'. I decided to firmly place myself in the classical camp. Caelus is Latin in it's roots, not English after all.

Random Fact: Caelian is also the name of one of the seven hills in Rome, but that version is pronounced with an 'S'.

Caelum is pronounced kae̯.lum

Caelus is very similar kae̯.lus.

So Caelian would be pronounced kae̯.lē-ən. However, my southern tends to come out and sometimes it comes out as Kay instead of Kae. Either way is fine with me, but just don't just the soft 'S'. That would drive me insane.

Excerpt from Lost

I put my phone back in my back pocket. Crossing my arms, I looked up at the stars again. The night was devoid of clouds, unusual for spring. Golden stars glittered across the heavens, winking at me from the endless arch of the void and transporting me to a place of tranquility. The peace of space poured into my soul.

“What’s a Liam moment?” Kian’s gruff voice whispered. I felt his hot breath caress my ear. His closeness both startled me and sent a shiver down my spine. I straightened my back.

“I thought I told you I wasn’t interested.” I attempted to make my voice sound forceful, but it came out soft. I felt the heat from his body as he stepped closer to me.

“What’s your name?” Kian asked. The gruffness of his voice from earlier had left. This new voice was smooth and flowed like poetry. My heart sped up and I heard the blood pulsing in my ears. I was sure he could hear it. What kind of Talent was he using to cause me to react this way?

“Quit using your Talent on me,” I hissed.

“I’m not. If I was, you’d know it,” he replied with a chuckle.

“Oh.” I didn’t understand what was happening. He placed a hand on my waist and the warmth was searing. I was sure it would leave a mark. My eyes closed and my breath deepened. Tingles flowed from his hand, spreading throughout my body and stirring something in my soul. I released a breath I didn’t realize I had been holding. “Take your hand off me and back away before I break your fingers.”

Kian snickered. “Spunky.”

“Creepy,” I replied.

Kian chuckled again, his hot breath shooting sparks right to my stomach.

“Don’t make me ask again.” I felt his hand tense. His fingers increased their pressure against my waist right before the coldness swept in as he removed his hand. I released the breath I was holding.

“Tell me, how would you have broken my fingers?” Kian asked as I watched his hips curve inward inching closer to me. His movements were surreptitious and my heart accelerated as the space between became almost non-existent. He was still too close for my comfort, but at least he wasn’t touching me. My focus shot up to his face. His face was a mixture of curiosity and humor.

“Every orphanage offers a variety of self-defense classes, among other electives.” I inclined my head as I studied him again. “You’ve never lived in one.”

Kian’s smirk graduated to a full on smile, igniting his face. This smile stole my breath and something told me it was one that few people had the pleasure of seeing. An unintentional smile dangled on the corner of my lips in return.

“No, I haven’t had the pleasure. Spunky, independent, and observant. You’re a triple threat. . . You never gave me your name.”

“Correct.”

Kian leaned forward. “Will you tell me your name?”

“No.”

He leaned closer. The heat from his body warmed me and my heart felt as if it would explode. I lifted my gaze back to the stars, trying to force my willpower to rally against Kian’s charms.

“Please,” he whispered.

“No,” I softly replied. His presence was intense and it scared me. My brain screamed at me to introduce his nose to the palm of my hand, but my arm refused to obey. My traitorous body reveled in possibility of feeling his strong arms wrapped around and pressing himself against it.

“Well, if you’re not going to tell me, I’m sure your friend will.”

Confused, I turned to look at Kian. My nose brushed against his cheek for a brief moment before my brain could register to lean back.

“What the?” Michael’s voice broke whatever spell Kian was putting on me. “Get your hands off her!”

Cold air filled the space where Kian’s body used to be. Restrained, I turned, tilting my head as I watched Michael jerk Kian even further from me. Kian and Michael were the same height, but Kian surpassed Michael in mass. His corded muscles rippled as he squeezed his hands into fists and his angular features twisted into a snarl.

“Are you okay, Sadie?” Michael looked at me, softening his features and sweeping me from head to toe. I felt Lacy’s arm entwine with mine.

I shrugged. “Nothing I couldn’t handle.” My body was shaking, but thankfully my voice came out steady and disinterested.

Kian turned away from Michael and looked at me. His questioning gaze flowed into a smirk. He was enjoying this. Kian twisted out of Michael’s grasp with ease, his movements graceful. Kian was trained as well.

I felt my lips curl up as I watched.

Kian rotated to face me again, ignoring Michael’s protests. “Until we meet again, Sadie.” He dipped his head in a courteous manner, keeping his gaze locked on to mine. He began to leave, turning back to look at me again with one side of his lips curled up as if we were sharing a secret.

My heart fell into my stomach as I realized that he had learned my name. Throughout the whole uncomfortable encounter, I had kept him in the dark. My lips pursed as I watched him walk away. Even his stride was arrogant. Kian was unsettling.

“What was that?” Lacy asked.

I shrugged again. “I have no idea.”
